FACILITY DESIGN GUIDES
LOCKERS & CHANGING

Lockers

4min

Objective

Provide an area for guests to secure their personal belongings and change into spa or fitness attire.

  • Multiple types of guests may utilize the locker areas:
    • Spa
    • Fitness
    • Day use
    • Members

Space Planning

Position the locker area near the locker room entry. Situate the lockers in areas that promote a sense of privacy. Do not place lockers in main circulation areas.

  • If a membership program exists, position the dedicated member lockers separately from spa guest lockers.
  • Smaller lockers or cubbies may be provided for use by fitness guests.
  • At larger locker areas, avoid large wide open locker rooms. Use the layout of the lockers to strategically create smaller nodes of changing areas to create a greater sense of privacy.
  • Visual privacy is desired. A doorway leading from coed areas, should not permit a direct view into the changing area of the locker area.

Design Features

  • If the facility contains a pool or similar amenity, include a swim suit extractor to dry suits.
  • Specify stools, ottomans or other seating that is comfortable, easily movable with durable and water resistant finishes. Supply one for every three to five lockers.
  • Accessibility regulations may mandate specific sizes, heights and lengths of benches.
  • Include full height mirrors. Ensure mirrors are located in areas that do not compromise the other guests that are changing.
  • Plan for a high quality weight scale.
  • Consider designing countertops or alcoves for grooming and make-up interspersed between the lockers. Design the counters for sitting at the women’s locker rooms and standing at the men’s locker rooms. Include power for hair dryers.
  • Provide a beverage station featuring fruit-infused waters, and light snacks.

Furniture and Equipment

Consider the following:

  • Locker size guidelines for accommodating business attire including jackets, shirts and pants etc. are as follows:
    • Half lockers 45cm W x 61cm D x a minimum of 99cm H (18” x 24” x 39”) excluding the toe kick or top fascia.
    • Full lockers 45cm W x 61cm D x a minimum of 182.8cm H (18” x 24” x 72”) excluding the toe kick or top fascia.
    • Cube lockers 45cm W x 61cm D x a minimum of 61cm H (18” x 24” x 24”) excluding the toe kick or fascia.
    • Include a clothes rod and hangers for business clothing.
  • The locker interiors should be a washable wood or laminate surface.
  • Consider a lower shoe compartment, integrated jewelry tray, and a small mirror mounted on the inside of the locker door.
  • Specify a keyless locking system.
  • Provide signage for locker numbers.
