FACILITY DESIGN GUIDES
RETAIL AREA

Retail Shop/Space

4min

Objective

As a full service retail outlet, the store will be a unique blend of professional skin care lines, bath and body care accessories, home accessories, jewelry, handbags, clothing and locally crafted goods. The retail facility is an essential component of the spa’s financial success. Provide spa related retail to augment the guest’s experience and increase revenue.

Space Planning

Locate the spa retail adjacent to the spa arrival in a visually prominent location central to the main traffic flow of arriving and departing guests. Geographically provide some separation from the arrival as a guest’s first impression of a spa should not be of a cluttered retail environment. The retail area should have clear sight lines from the welcome desk.

Design Features

Consider the design of the following features:

  • Entrance designed tastefully to attract customers and wide enough to encourage casual entry into the space. (6 feet wide minimum)
  • Conceal all equipment from guest view.
  • For larger spas, include a space for a retail office within the retail area. (Spas 10,000 square feet or larger)
  • Extend perimeter walls to structure for security.
  • Ensure any furniture is properly protected to avoid scratching wood floors.
  • Retail Fixture Design:
    • Maximize wall space for merchandise. Break up long expanses of shelving into +/- 8’ sections.
    • Provide merchandise systems with adjustable shelves and hanging rods. Shelves are to be 12-15” deep.
    • Merchandise top shelf to be no higher than 60”
    • If the products shelves are lit from the ceiling (not individually lit) provide glass shelves
    • Provide lockable storage cabinets underneath the merchandise system. Cabinets are to be no higher than 30” high and no deeper than 18”. All locks are to be keyed to one key.
    • Provide merchandising tables. Quantity depends upon size of space. The amount of merchandising tables will reduce the linear feet of wall space for shelving.
    • Provide a separate lockable storage room.
